The game was to mark the opening of the David Longhurst Stand. In the absence of Gordon Strachan and David Batty, who were on International duty, Lee Chapman was captain for the night in the match which was in aid of the Fund for the David Longhurst Stand. David Longhurst had died while playing for York City against Lincoln City on 8th September 1990 aged twenty-five. The York goals were scored by Wayne Hall and Shaun Reid, the latter in the fifty-sixth minute. Lee Chapman had scored for Leeds in the thirty-first minute and Steve Hodge had also scored in the first half, for them to lead 2-1 at Half-Time. For Leeds, Tony O'Dowd replaced John Lukic in goal. Steve Nicholson replaced Steve Hodge, Damian Henderson replaced Lee Chapman and Mark Tinkler replaced Andy Williams all at Half Time. Gary Kelly replaced Ray Wallace at Right Half, David Wetherall came on for Chris Whyte at left half, and Jon Newsome replaced Chris Fairclough at Centre Half after 70 minutes. Although Leeds used eight substitutes, York made only three changes with Tony Barratt replacing Andy McMillan at right back at half time, and in the fifty-ninth minute there was a double substitution with Steve Bushell coming on for Nigel Pepper at outside right and Glenn Naylor replacing Steve Osborne at inside left. The Referee was H. Taylor of York and there were almost 1,000 Leeds fans in the crowd of 4,374.
